Nghi Son Thermal Power Company: Ensuring emission targets in operation

In the first months of 2023 and especially during the peak periods of the dry season, when electricity demand increased, ensuring safe and stable electricity supply was not so easy. However, with flexible management and the spirit of overcoming difficulties of leaders, officers and employees, Nghi Son Thermal Power Company has not only completed the task of providing electricity but also strictly implemented environmental protection work, becoming one of the typical businesses of Thanh Hoa Province.

About operating power plants safely

Nghi Son Thermal Power Company is assigned to manage and operate 2 units of Nghi Son 1 Thermal Power Plant with a total capacity of 600MW. Up to now, Nghi Son 1 Thermal Power Plant has provided the national electricity system with over 30 billion kWh of electricity.

With the current climate change situation, such prolonged extreme weather has caused the demand for electrical equipment to increase very high, the capacity requirement of the power system has increased to a record high and wind power sources have increased. Solar power has unstable characteristics with many erratic changes. Therefore, the requirement to ensure safe and reliable operation of the plant must be given top priority, requiring solidarity and consensus from the Company's Board of Directors to all employees in the factory.

To complete the assigned economic and technical targets as well as ensure the safe and stable operation of power units, furnaces, and load systems, the Company has proposed a series of basic solutions.

Specifically, the Company has systematically carried out testing, periodically changed equipment, and continuously reviewed and checked equipment status to detect and promptly handle equipment defects and abnormalities. Every month, the operation teams script and rehearse incidents according to the established plan, and at the same time disseminate to all operating staff typical incidents of the plants to improve experience and prevent incidents.

Moreover, the Company always prepares adequate fuel including coal, HFO oil, DO to be ready to meet mobilization needs; reviews and prepares adequate supplies, especially for equipment that frequently changes working modes, ensuring operational reliability.

As a result, in the first 7 months of 2023, the Company has produced an electricity output of 2,411.97 million kWh, reaching 95.83% (2,516.97 million kWh) of the Ministry of Industry and Trade's 7-month plan and reaching 62.68 million kWh. % (3,847.92 million kWh) of the yearly plan of the Ministry of Industry and Trade; reaching 101.22% (2,383 million kWh) of EVNGENCO1's 7-month plan and reaching 64.93% (3,715 million kWh) of EVNGENCO1's yearly plan.

About environmental protection work

As a unit operating in a specific industry, in addition to production and business tasks, Nghi Son Thermal Power Company always pays top attention to environmental protection.

The company has made efforts to fully complete all procedures as well as implement regulations according to legal policies on environmental protection; The investment in exhaust gas treatment and monitoring systems at the plants and maintaining good operations to ensure Vietnamese Standards are in priority. The monitoring results show that the quality of exhaust gas and wastewater of Nghi Son 1 Thermal Power Plant is always guaranteed to be below the allowable threshold.

For the collection, transportation and storage of ash and slag, the Company regularly inspects, supervises, and coordinates with contractors to ensure the collection, transportation and treatment of ash and slag according to in accordance with approved operating procedures. Up to now, the ash & slag of plants have met the standards for use as suitable construction materials (cement additives, concrete, unburnt bricks, backfilling and road base...) and the Company has a full offtake package contract with other units.

In 2023, the Company officially put the Electronic Board displaying environmental parameters into use. The electronic board is mounted at the main gate of the plants for all people to conveniently monitor and supervise the Company's environmental protection work. In addition, all emission parameters are posted online so that the relevant departments and agencies can continue supervising.

Not only emissions parameters (dust concentration, exhaust flow, SO2, NOx... and parameters of industrial wastewater and cooling water such as pH, chlorine content, TSS, wastewater temperature...) are displayed on the Electronic Board, but also the standard values according to National Technical Regulations on industrial waste are displayed for people and local authorities to monitor, compare and evaluate.

With the motto of operating the plant safely and ensuring the environment, leaders and employees of Nghi Son Thermal Power Company have set management and operation goals to ensure the maintenance of emission targets below the allowed value. For exhaust gas is NOx 850mg/Nm3, SOx 425mg/Nm3, Dust 170mg/Nm3 and for allowed wastewater is residual chlorine 1.17mg/l, temperature 400C, TSS 58.5mg/l, contributing to the supply Providing electricity for national economic development and environmental protection for the entire society.
